Cannabis plants and cannabis herb with a street value estimated to be in the region of €100,000 was seized this week following a joint operation involving gardai from Galway Divisional Drug Unit and gardai from Gort Garda Station.
The planned search took place at a premises in Derrawee West, Derrybrian, Co Galway, on Tuesday, October 8, during which gardai seized 100 mature cannabis plants and approximately 1kg of cannabis herb. Although analysis of the drugs is still pending it is believed that the haul is worth approximately €100,000.
Two men, aged 40 and 21, were arrested at the scene and detained at Galway Garda Station under the provisions of Section 2 of the Drugs Trafficking Act, 1996.
It has been confirmed that the 40-year-old man has been charged with being in possession of drugs with the intention of selling or supplying and cultivation of cannabis plants, contrary to Section 15 and 17 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, and is due to appear before Gort District Court on October 24 next. The 21-year-old man was released without charge and a file is being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
