The Galway City Museum will host two lectures over the coming days - one on the founding fathers of Galway city, the other on a Galway landlord during The Famine.
Author Adrian Martyn will give a lecture entitled Galway’s Founding Father & More this evening at 7pm, looking at just who can lay claim to having founded the city.
On Saturday at 2pm, author and scholar John Joe Conwell will discuss this life and times of Ulick John de Burgh, Marquess of Clanricarde, who held a 52,000-acre estate in east Galway.
As one of only three Irish landowners to serve in cabinet during The Famine, he found himself torn between compassion for the hungry and loyalty to the landlord classes.
Over the coming Thursdays, the museum will hold regular history lectures. The programme is a lecture on Máirtín Mór McDonogh, Galway businessman and Cumann na nGaedheal TD, given by Jackie Uí Chionna (October 10 ); spies, informers, and intelligence in Galway during the War of Independence, with Cormac Ó Comhraí (October 17 ); the history of Galway’s gaols and the stories behind some if its prisoners, with Geraldine Curtin (October 24 ).
