Greenfields secure double over Galway

Title holders Greenfields triumphed by 3-0 over local rivals Galway in Connacht Senior Hockey League action at the weekend.

The first goal came after nine minutes when centre back Neasa McGettigan found Trish Garett on the left. She was able to feed the ball across the goal for a deflection finished by Pamela Ryan.

Although there was some strong defending by Emma Glanville and Hannah Gormley of Galway, Greenfields took control and created some more close chances before the second goal came from lively forward Alice Meagher who took on a ball passed across the circle and coolly flicked it high into the top left corner.

Several attacking attempts by right back Anne Madden brought Galway back into the game, but Greenfields’ defence of Aine Collins, Catherine Moore and Sarah McDonald held strong and they led 2-0 at half time.

In a competitive second half, Greenfields finally converted one of their penalty corners when Mary Healy tapped in.

Greenfields 2nds faced Galway 2nds, also in the Connacht Senior League on Sunday and once again Greenfields prevailed, this time by 3-2. It was a much tougher encounter for Greenfields who took an early 2-0 lead through Carmel Heery and Sinead Minihan.

Galway, always looking dangerous, replied through Niamh O’Sullivan and Grace Melvin to level the game by half time. A close game pursued in the second half with both teams piling on the pressure and both keepers Laoise Fegan (Greenfields ) and Ailbhe Nally (Galway ) pulling off some fantastic saves. However a short corner secured the win for Greenfields with Clodagh Kennedy slotting home the winner.
