As we approach the centenary of Walter Macken’s birth next year the opportunity arises for a creative innovative theatrical person to fill the role that he once held as Artistic Director of Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe.
Due to a serious fire at An Taibhdhearc the ideally based midtown theatre remained in darkness for five years and has only opened its doors in the past year. Bord na Taibhdheirce worked diligently through the worst recession in 80 years to raise the necessary support and manage the renovation of the theatre as a modern theatrical facility and Artistic Director, Freda Nic Giolla Chatháin has deftly steered the newly rejuvenated theatre through its first year.
Freda is now moving on to new challenges which leaves an enviable vacancy for a suitable ambitious candidate, fluent In Irish, who will undertake to implement the newly defined mission of Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe –
To provide a professional and exceptional national centre and resource to support the production, presentation, touring, training and experimentation of theatre through the medium of the Irish language while building new audiences and developing the next generation of Irish language theatre practitioners and playwrights.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to devise an artistic programme for the theatre for the next three years and fulfilling the role held by Walter Macken to make his or her mark on the Galway theatrical scene and indeed the national Irish language theatre. Two other important positions at Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe are also to be filled and all details are to be found at http://antaibhdhearc.com/fogra-post/ The deadline for applications is tomorrow Oct 4.
