Kickboxer Bryan Merrigan (above right ) successfully defended his All Ireland title to Cork Thaiboxer Dave Walsh in Galway at the weekend.
The Connemara man gave a master class in K-1 in the main event, although Walsh, in typical Muay Thai fashion, dominated in the clinch and used good knee strikes.
However Merrigan landed some excellent low kicks, huge right hand bombs on Walsh’s chin, and also some class head kicks before dropping him in the fifth round for an eight-count to ensure he retained the IKF All Ireland Super Welterweight K-1 crown.
European champion Gary Manogue took a unanimous victory against Gareth Evans, who is the current British No 1. Once again this fight had the fans on their feet and proved to be a valuable four rounds against a pedigree opponent for Manogue ahead of his upcoming World title fight on December 7.
Saturday’s show kicked off with three junior light contact kickboxing bouts which was an all-Galway affair between Black Dragon and AR Kickboxing, which took two wins out of the three.
