Planning approval has been granted for five new bus shelters across Galway city this week, and calls have also been made to erect a new bus shelter in Corrib Park.
At Monday’s city council meeting, approval was granted to erect bus shelters at Shangort Road, Knocknacarra Road, Fr Griffin Road, Dublin Road, and Monivea Road.
The approval has been welcomed by Labour city councillor Niall McNelis, who said the shelters, and especially those in the Knocknacarra area, “will assist in the future development of public transport in the city”.
Monday’s meeting also saw councillors unanimously passed a motion proposed by Labour’s Cllr Billy Cameron to prioritise the provision of a new bus shelter at Corrib Park.
According to Cllr Cameron, the proposed new bus stop will be situated close to the community centre and boxing club on the Seamus Quirke Road. It was originally part of the Quirke Road improvement scheme but was considered to close to residential dwellings and was objected to.
However the council’s director of services for transport and infrastructure Ciarán Hayes gave assurances that it would be included in the next batch of bus shelters to be rolled out by the council.
