Ó Cuív calls for early payment of DAS to farmers

There is no specific payment date for the Disadvantage Area Scheme and therefore no reason payments cannot start being made to farmers in early September.

This is according to Fianna Fáil agriculture spokesperson and Galway West TD Éamon Ó Cuív, who is calling on Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney to make the DAS payments.

He said farmers should be “contacted immediately” where the Department have detected any difficulty with their application so issues in contention can be resolved immediately.

According to Dep Ó Cuív, many farmers do not receive money until “a very late date” because of issues which arise during the clarification process of applications.

“This year has been a year of very, very, significant hardship for farmers,” argued Dep Ó Cuív. “For this reason, it is vital now the Minister ensure the payments under the 2013 scheme issue in the first week of September to the farmers in the scheme.”
