The N59 re-alignment and Moycullen bypass has taken a significant step forward as Galway County Council has served compulsory purchase orders on behalf of the National Roads Authority to affected landowners.
Galway West TD Séan Kyne confirmed this week that consultants are to be shortly appointed to prepare contract documents for the N59 re-alignment and the bypass separately. Deputy Kyne welcomed this latest development adding that it was a “positive step in ensuring that construction can start if funding becomes available”.
“Minister Leo Varadkar has informed me that he is awaiting budgetary figures before deciding on any funding allocations to the NRA for the project. He visited Moycullen last month and viewed the N59 road into the village, saying at the time that the visit helped him when decisions had to be made.”
The Environmental Impact Statement and the CPO were published in December 2011 and submitted to An Bord Pleanála for approval. The scheme was approved by the planning board in November 2012.
The length of the proposed scheme is 1.1kms and will involve the construction of a single carriageway 7.0m wide with 3.0m for pedestrians and cycles on each side. The scheme would significantly improve road safety for road users and greatly enhance the environs of Moycullen village by providing safe connectivity for many houses to the village centre.
