The Third Policeman, the celebrated novel written by Irish writer Brian O’Nolan, is to be turned into a stage adaptation for the Town Hall Theatre.
The production will be a mix of spoken word narration of the story along with a live score written and performed by Belfast composer and musician Colin Reid.
Written by O’Nolan under the famed pseudonym Flann O’Brien, this blackly comic masterpiece follows a nameless narrator and his attempts to procure the missing cashbox of a man he has murdered in order to afford to publish his book.
The story is considered to be a murder thriller and an hilarious comic satire about an obscure rural Irish town and its archetypal police force, a surrealistic vision of eternity, the story of a tender brief unrequited love affair between a man and his bicycle, and a chilling fable of unending guilt.
The spoken word interpretations of the original text will be accompanied by live piano and a string quartet, under the stewardship of Colin Reid. Reid is a career musician who has previously played with many well established acts. Reid decided on a change of focus some years ago when he wrote piano music to complement the haunting darkness and quirky humour of the 1960s novel, which he had first read as a teenager.
The Third Policeman will take to the stage at the Town Hall Theatre on Monday September 2 and tickets are €20/€16 and available from the venue.
