Colga FC is preparing for two cup finals, the first of which takes place on Sunday in Eamonn Deacy Park.
Colga meet Ballina in the women's Connacht Cup before they return to the Galway venue for the Irish Women's Intermediate Cup final against Douglas Hall of Cork on September 1.
The south Galway side marched in the final after a 3-2 victory over St Joseph's in Dublin on Sunday, having beaten Shelbourne away in the quarter-finals.
They were forced to come from behind after the Dubliners opened after two minutes with a speculative punt up field The ball bounced kindly for the home side, allowing them to get behind the defence and open the scoring.
Colga, however, started to play their customary ground football, and quick passing put pressure on the Joey’s midfield. After 10 minutes Colga had equalised when, after some good work by Becky McPhilbin and Keara Cormican in midfield, Susie Cunningham dispatched the ball into the net. Colga kept Joey’s pinned in their own half for most of the first half and were rewarded with a second goal after pressure from Cunningham forced an own-goal, giving the westerners a 2-1 half-time lead.
The Dubliners, however, grabbed the initiative in the second half, and had equalised by the 10th minute. Both sides searched for the winner which arrived in the 35th minute when Colga’s Becky McPhilbin was taken down in the box, and Carol Mannion scored the ensuing penalty.
In a good weekend for Galway women’s football, Corrib Rangers went to Wexford on Sunday and won 1-0 to reach the Junior Irish Women’s Cup final.
