Kenny steps down

Mattie Kenny has stepped down as Galway senior hurling coach, citing work and family commitments.

The Tynagh-Abbey-Duniry clubman had served alongside manager Anthony Cunningham and Tom Helebert on the Galway management team for the past two years, with the trio having been handed the reins after guiding the county's u-21s to All-Ireland success in 2011.

After the exciting championship run of 2012, which saw the team defeated by Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final, this year was a huge disappointment.

Despite having another year to run as part of a three-year term - it is not clear at this stage if there will be other changes in the management team for the 2014 season - a review is currently taking place by the county board.
