Guided tours of Renmore Barracks and mediaeval Galway, classes in set dancing, and a lecture on the cosmos take place in Galway city as part of Heritage Week 2013.
Dúchas na Gaillimhe – Galway Civic Trust has organised a wide variety of events for Heritage Week which begins this Saturday and runs until Sunday August 25.
This Saturday at 10.45am, there will be a guided tour of NUI Galway’s geology museum and a trad music session in Club Árus na nGael at 9.30pm.
On Sunday the writer Susan Millar DuMars will hold a storytelling event for families in the Hall of the Red Earl, Druid Lane, at 2pm and 3pm. The hall will also hold a basket making demonstration with Ciaran Hogan on Monday at 1pm and 4pm.
Monday will also see Tom Kenny give a public talk, Remembering Walter Macken, in An Taibhdhearc at 7.30pm.
A crochet and lace making demonstration and exhibition with Anne Quinn from the Galway Crochet Craft takes place on Tuesday in the Hall of the Red Earl at 10am and 4pm.
Is Leor Beirt - It Takes Two, an opportunity to practice speaking Irish will be held in McCambridges, Shop Street, at 10.30pm; while Malachy Thomson will give a talk on the night sky and the cosmos, entitled The Stars and Other Worlds, in the Galway Education Centre, Wellpark, at 7.30pm.
A guided tour of Dun Uí Mhaoliosa (Renmore Barracks ) military museum dedicated to the memories of the Connaught Rangers and Irish Defence Forces takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday at 10.15am and 2.15pm.
Michael Quinn will also lead a guided walk of Galway’s waterways, starting at the Spanish Arch at 2pm, on Monday and Wednesday. Mr Quinn will also lead a medieval walk through Galway city centre, starting at the Hall of the Red Earl at 2pm on Tuesday and Thursday August 22.
There will be an introduction to set dancing in Áras na nGael on Tuesday and Thursday 2pm.
Welcome to the Wonderful Colourful World of Gemstones, a lecture on the science of gemmology with Prof Martin Feely takes place in NUIG at 7.30pm on Wednesday. Those attending are asked to assemble at the Quad archway.
On Friday August 23 there will be a concert with harpist Kathleen Loughnane in the Hall of the Red Earl at 12.30pm. At 7pm there will be a guided walk in Merlin Wood with Sean Purtill. Those attending are asked to assemble at Doughiska Park, near the Galway City Council compound.
On Saturday 24 there will be a guided tour of NUIG’s Zoology Museum at 10.45am. There will be a trad session in Club Árus na nGael at 9.30pm while on Sunday 25 the club will hold a céilí at 3pm.
Sunday 25 will also see an introduction to wool preparation and felt making with Martha Wanczyk in the Hall of the Red Earl at 10am and 4pm.
