Explore the wonder of Merlin Woods for Heritage Week

A variety of events will be taking place in Merlin Park Woods this month as part of the annual Heritage Week which runs from August 17 to 25.

Events at Merlin Park begin with an exhibition in the administrative building of Merlin Park Hospital, which opens at 3pm on August 17 and runs throughout the week. The administrative building will also host a talk the history of the Merlin Park graves from 1650 on Sunday 18.

Norbert Sheerin will give two historical lectures in the administrative building, on Monday 19 at 1pm and Wednesday 21 at 7.30pm.

Monday 19 will also see Kate McAney giving a talk and guided walk on bats in Merlin Wood, beginning at the Family Resource Centre, from 9pm.

The Friends Of Merlin Woods group will lead a butterfly walk on Tuesday 20; there will be a woodland walk with Sean Purtell on Wednesday 21. Both walks start at the administrative building at 1pm.

Sean Purtell will lead a second woodland walk, starting at the Galway City Council compound in Doughiska at 7pm on Friday 23. There will be a woodland habitat study on Saturday 24 at 11pm, with Margaret O’Flaherty, starting at the Family Resource Centre.

On Sunday 25 from 11am, again at the council compound, Sharon Lynch will lead a ‘creating a mandala’ and a ‘people’s picnic’.
