Hole in the Wall thieves coolly walked away from scene carrying a briefcase

Gardaí are reviewing CCTV footage as part of their investigation into the aggravated burglary at the home of a city publican earlier this week.

At approximately 4am on Tuesday morning, two masked men entered the home of Stephen Fahy, the owner of the Hole in the Wall pub on Eyre Street. The men are reported to have tied up the local businessman in his bed with cord, and proceeded to make away with a substantial sum of money, alleged to be in the region of €10,000.

Mr Fahy, who is in his 60s, managed to free himself after the men had departed the scene and alerted Gardaí from a nearby taxi office on Eyre Street. The victim survived the traumatic ordeal without injury.

In addition to this, the men are reported to have had a definite knowledge of the local area, having conducted the robbery over a period of 10 minutes before making their escape. The men had cut telephone lines and had disabled the CCTV and alarm systems upon entering the premises, located adjacent to the popular bar, which would suggest that it was a professional and premeditated robbery.

The two men escaped on foot in the direction of the Woodquay area carrying a distinctive briefcase or similar type of bag.

The sum of money stolen from the establishment was reported to have been the total takings for the previous busy four nights of business, the end of the Galway Race Week. It is understood that the men had taken nothing else from the premises during the burglary.

Since Tuesday, Gardaí have declined to comment on any developments in the investigation which is still ongoing. Gardaí can confirm that an incident room has been established at Mill Street Garda Station however there have been no arrests made at present.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have been in Woodquay or on Eyre Street at around 4am on Tuesday, or who may have witnessed any suspicious behaviour in that area at that time, to contact them at Mill Street Garda Station on (091 ) 538000.
