Close Castle Park alleyways to stop illegal dumping says O’Flaherty

Four of the 11 alleyways in Castle Park are heavily littered with household rubbish, leading to a “foul stench” from one alleyway in particular, according to a local councillor.

Cllr Terry O’Flaherty has been “inundated with complaints” from residents in relation to the alleyways, which, she says, are also a “haven for wanton vandalism”.

The illegal dumping of rubbish is a cause of great concern to residents and Cllr O’Flaherty is appealing to those that are carrying out the dumping to stop immediately.

“This illegal dumping is nothing short of wanton vandalism,” she said. “It is particularly unfair to the residents that take pride in their homes in this area.”

In 2008, Cllr O’Flaherty called on City Hall to consider incorporating laneways in the city into the gardens of the homes adjacent. Subsequently, a successful schedule of works was carried out in Tirellan incorporating nine of the alleyways into the gardens of local residents.

She is now encouraging the council to look at a similar schedule of works to deal with Castlepark. The closure of the laneways can only be carried out with the full consent of and after consultation with the residents who reside near them.

However Cllr O’Flaherty said the experience of Tirellan residents has been positive in this regard. “Since the closing of the alleyways in Tirellan,” she said, “the feedback I have been receiving is that there is a great improvement to the lives of the residents
