Despite Galway city having the State’s third highest Household Tax compliance rate, anti-Household Tax candidates believe they can still “mount a serious challenge” at the next local elections.
The Campaign Against Home & Water Taxes has selected two candidates to run in Galway city at the 2014 Local Elections
Conor Burke will run in Galway City East while Tommy Holohan will run in Galway City West. The campaign plans to announce a candidate to run in Galway City Central and in a number of wards in County Galway.
In its campaigning, CAHWT is planning to mainly target seats held by Labour. It has criticised the party for “its betrayal of ordinary people and for continuing the disastrous austerity/bailout policy”.
The CAHWT platform is not just focused on the controversial Household Tax, but operates on a broad anti-austerity platform.
“Austerity is destroying people’s livelihoods and wrecking the economy,” said a spokesperson for the group. “If elected, our councillors will not support cutbacks in council services. We will instead call for progressive taxation to target the wealthy sectors which could raise billions to invest in the economy to create jobs.”
