McHugh’s pub to host racing preview event to aid Injured Jockeys’ Fund

McHugh’s Pub in Castlegar will host a Galway Plate and Hurdle preview evening next Tuesday July 30, starting at 9.45pm.

The evening will consist of a panel discussion of racing experts who will discuss the prospects for the two biggest days and races of the Galway Racing Festival; the Galway Plate on Wednesday July 31, and the Galway Hurdle on Ladies’ Day, Thursday August 1.

The panel will comprise RTE sports presenters Tracy Piggott and Tom Lee; Paddy Power of Paddy Power Bookmakers; RTE Racing’s fashion presenter Marietta Doran; trainer Shark Hanlon; jockey Niall McCullagh; and local celebrity, head chef, and owner of McHugh’s Pub, Johnny Kelly.

The night, which will be free to attend, will include live music from Tony Coyne after the panel discussion finishes up, with the bar staying open until 2am.

On the night, there will also be the chance to make an optional donation to the Injured Jockeys Fund. This fund was set up for professional riders and apprentices to grant benefits in the event of bodily injury on the racecourse or at home at the stables. The fund also supports research into the development of better safety equipment used by jockeys and apprentices for competitive horse racing.

The event will go ahead in association with the Galway Races and Paddy Power Bookmakers.
