THE MIGHTY Primal Scream are coming to Galway to play a ‘Róisín Dubh presents...’ concert in Leisureland, Salthill, on Saturday October 26.
The Scottish alternative rockers have proven to be the genre’s most hardy survivors, since lead singer Bobby Gillespie formed the band, initially as a side-project, to his then main role as drummer with The Jesus & Mary Chain.
The Scream initially explored Byrds jangle pop on their 1987 debut Sonic Flower Groove, then Rolling Stones meets MC5 hard rock on their eponymous second album, before creating one of the epochal albums of the last 25 years with 1991’s Screamadelica. A visionary album, it melded house and techno with rock and catapulted the band into the big time.
Such was the scale of the album’s achievement that it proved nearly impossible to follow up and so began a fallow period for the Scots. However the decline was arrested and the band roared back with two of their most acclaimed works - 1997’s Vanishing Point and 2000’s XTRMNTR. The Scream have always been best when fusing their love of hard rock with their passion for techno.
This year saw the release of the band’s 10th album, More Light, an epic work where Gillespie and Co cast a cold eye over Cameron’s Britain, the European economic slump, and its attendant social problems.
More Light has proved a commercial and critical success, receiving four stars from MOJO and allmusic.com, while Pitchfork praised it’s “fusion of dreamy acoustic psychedelia and white-knuckled Krautrock propulsion”, concluding:
“More Light primes the Scream for their fourth decade in the best possible way, serving as a summary of everything they’ve done before, yet sounding nothing like it.”
