Kilconnell landfill liaison committee approve funding for community projects

The development of 12 local community projects, in line with the requirements of the Greenstar Landfill Projects Fund, has been awarded a total of €132,725.

At a recent meeting of the Kilconnell landfill liaison committee, the grant was announced for the projects from the Kilconnell, Woodlawn, New Inn, Killalaghton, and Cappatagle areas.

Chairman of the committee Cllr Connolly expressed his thanks to the other members, including Cllrs Mullins and Joyce, community representatives, and members of Galway County Council for their assistance and support.

“The projects approved for funding today are all contributing to improving the quality of life in the area and will all greatly benefit from this allocation of funding,” said Cllr Connolly.

The Kilconnell Landfill Project Support Fund was established to support a number of worthwhile community projects in the area and submissions were invited from local groups in January 2008. The Project Support Fund will be administered by Galway County Council, which also facilitates the landfill liaison committee. The committee anticipate that a second allocation will be made in September of this year for projects currently under review.

Some of the larger projects approved for funding include a €25,000 contribution towards the extension and refurbishment of Cappataggle primary school, €30,000 to develop an outdoor play area, provide safe car parking, and build an extra room and storage area in Killalaghton Hall, €30,000 as a contribution towards an extension to New Inn Community Centre, and €30,000 for Woodlawn Heritage group to continue their work in the restoration of heritage structures in the area.
