The sale of four Garda stations in Galway another blow to the local communities and is part of “a wider attack on rural Ireland” by the Government.
This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway East TD, Michael Kitt who has criticised the decision of Justice Minister Alan Shatter to sell off the recently closed down Garda stations in Menlough, Kilchreest, Kiltullagh, and Lettermore.
According to Dep Kitt, the Government’s reason for selling them is that it “could not find any other use for the buildings”.
“The buildings have been central to community life for decades, not only providing comfort and security to local residents, but also offering important ancillary services,” he said.
Dep Kitt also called the shutting of Garda stations as “fundamentally wrong” and an “attack on rural communities”.
“Ten Garda stations have been shut down in Galway this year alone,” he said. “Court houses, libraries, bank branches, credit unions are shutting down in many areas. The HSE is attempting to sell off some health centres. All of this amounts to a dramatic withdrawal of services in many communities across the West of Ireland
