Galway businesses must make use of JobsPlus, says Nolan

Galway businesses can play a major role in getting the long-term unemployed back to work by fully getting behind the new JobsPlus scheme.

The scheme, introduced by the Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton, gives employers who hire persons unemployed for greater than one year up to €10,000 for each recruit. The payment offsets some of the cost of taking on a new employee.

The scheme, which is targeted at hiring those out of work for more than a year, has been welcomed by Labour Galway West TD Derek Nolan.

“Long periods without a job becomes harder and harder for jobseekers to break,” he said. “The targeting of this funding is to make sure that nobody gets left behind in the job market simply because they have been looking for a long time.”

He added that JobsPlus will provide Galway businesses with incentives to “employ new staff and grow the local economy”.

“SMEs in Galway are the backbone of the economy and crucial to our recovery,” he said. “I recently carried out a survey of businesses in Galway West and one of the most common problems facing the sector is the cost of hiring new staff. JobsPlus will tackle that problem
