The Macron Galway Cup, the prestigious underage soccer tournament hosted by Salthill Devon, will take place this year from August 7 to 10.
Now in its ninth year, the tournament will once again boast the best of young talent. Already the FAI’s Emerging Talent squad, Leeds Utd, Maccabi Haifi and DNIPRO Ukraine are signed up to compete. They will join teams from all over Ireland, Britain, Finland and Norway, for the four day event which has become a major recruiting opportunity for the FAI and other organisations over the past nine years.
The event boasts some 50 teams playing 127 games in five categories - the 1996 Boys, 1998 Elite, 1998 Boys, 2000 Elite and 2000 Boys.
Tournament organiser Denis Burke says: “We are once again looking forward to another action-packed week, working alongside our new sponsor Macro as well as welcoming teams from as far away as Ukraine, Israel, Finland, and Norway, along with our usual representation from Northern Ireland and the Republic.”
Previously known as the Umbro Galway Cup, the tournament’s new title sponsor this year is Macron, the Italian sportswear company.
The Macron Galway Cup is estimated to boost the local economy by at least €2 million.
