Galway youngsters take gold at Taekwon-do championships

Galway taekwon-do students claimed eight gold medals at recent international competitions.

Members of the Connacht Taekwon-do and Gort Taekwon-do academies were part of the Irish junior girls and boys’ teams at the English championships in Derbyshire.

With local instructor, Shane Fitzgibbon (6th degree black belt ), attending as an umpire, Lisa Connolly (5th degree black belt ) coached for Irish squad for the first time role.

Both teams won the team sparring event, while Darragh Murphy (Gort ) and Brendan Kenny (Galway ) both took gold with the boys’ team as well as gold medals in their individual sections.

Shane Rabbitte won gold and silver in individual patterns and sparring, while the previous day Cathal Casey (Gort ) was in action at the IDM, International German Kickboxing Championships. The 15-year-old performed superbly to win gold in both continuous sparring and point-stop sparring at -45kgjunior.
