Culture and tradition to be celebrated next week at Spiddal 2013

Traidphicnic is back for the second year. The festival, which celebrates Irish culture and traditions, will run in Spiddal on Friday July 5 and Saturday July 6.

The packed programme of events includes top class traditional music gigs, along with family events during the day. All events are free of charge with the exception of the music workshops which will take place on the Saturday morning, however the Traidphicnic committee will accept donations throughout the weekend.

Charlie Lennon will officially open the Traidphicnic at 2pm on Friday July 5, with a session taking place at the opening as part of The Gathering celebrations. Two polkas have been posted online at www.traidphicnic.com and people are invited to learn them and play them, along with a few other easy session favourites, at the Friday session.

Music sessions will take place in local pubs each night and visitors can experience first-hand the warmth of the local welcome and of course the most famous aspect of the Irish culture, the craic.

Highlights of the festival include music with Martin Hayes and Kevin Crawford, Charlie Lennon, Eventide (Tóla Custy, Pádraig Rynne, Pauline Scanlon, and Donagh Hennessy ), The Bonny Men, Johnny Connolly, Colm Gannon and Harry Bradley, Toner Quinn and Malachy Bourke, Ciarán Ó Maonaigh, Caitlín Nic Gabhann and Caoimhín Ó Fearghail, Jesse Smith and Emmett Gill, and sean-nós dancing with Seosamh Ó Neachtain and Marian Ní Chonghaile.
