Galway Cathedral Summer Concerts 2013

THE GALWAY Cathedral Recitals summer concerts return from July 4 to August 8 with performances taking place each Thursday at 8pm.

The opening concert on July 4 brings together Schola Gregoriana Maynooth, conducted by Darina McCarthy, and cathedral organist Raymond O’Donnell.

The Schola, which specialises in historically accurate performances of Gregorian chant in both concert and liturgical settings, will present music for St Michael and St Nicholas while O’Donnell will play 20th century French and English music.

Irish mezzo-soprano Sharon Carty is joined on July 11 by Andrew Robinson on viola da gamba and David O’Shea on harpsichord, playing Handel’s ‘La Lucrezia’ and other Baroque vocal and instrumental music.

Martin Baker, the world-renowned organist of Westminster Cathedral will perform on July 18. On July 25 a programme of organ duets is presented by German husband-and-wife team Uwe and Judith Bestert.

Carole O’Connor, one of the most exciting of the new generation of Irish organists, plays music from three centuries on August 1; on August 8, Dublin-based flautist Ciarán O’Connell is joined by organist Siobhán Kilkelly for a programme of Mendelssohn, Bach, Alain, and others.

Each concert is followed by an informal reception with the evening’s performers over a glass of wine. Admission to each concert is €12/8. Season tickets are also available. See http://recitals.galwaycathedral.ie
