THE SECOND Traidphicnic festival, celebrating Irish music, culture, and traditions, takes place in An Spidéal on Friday July 5 and Saturday 6.
The festival, which is run bi-lingually and is part of The Gathering 2013, will be officially opened by Charlie Lennon at 2pm on July 5 outside Studio Cuan.
Gigs taking place that day are Johnny Connolly with sean nós dancing from Marian Ní Chonghaile (3pm ); Toner Quinn and Malachy Bourke (4.30pm ); Emmett Gill and Jesse Smith (6pm ); and Eventide, a band made up of Tóla Custy, Pádraig Rynne, Pauline Scanlon, Donagh Hennessy (7.30pm ).
Saturday’s gigs are Colm Gannon and Harry Bradley with sean nós Dancing from Seosamh Ó Neachtain (2pm ); The Bonny Men (3.30pm ); Ciarán Ó Maonaigh, Caitlín NicGabhann, and Caoimhín Ó Fearghaill (5pm ); Dordán, featuring Mary Bergin, Kathleen Loughnane, and Dearbhaill Standún (6.30pm ); and Martin Hayes and Kevin Crawford (8pm ).
Workshops takes place from 10.30am to 1.30pm with registration at Studio Cuan from 10 am. The cost is €15 but family discounts apply.
There are classes in sean nós dancing with Seosamh Ó Neachtain; Irish dancing with Caitlín NicGabhann; uilleann pipes with Caoimhín Ó Fearghaill; sean nós singing with Róisín Elsafty; fiddle with Martin Hayes, Tóla Custy, and Ciarán Ó Maonaigh; accordion with Johnny Óg Connolly; bodhrán with Jim Higgins; concertina with Padraig Rynne; tin whistle with Mary Bergin; flute with Kevin Crawford; and guitar with Donagh Hennessy.
For non-trad enthusiasts, there will be a variety of events around the Spiddal Craft Village, Studio Cuan, and the library on the Friday and Saturday.
These events are children’s sean nós dancing with Marian Ní Chonghaile; drumming with Colm De Bhaldraithe; storytelling with Síle NicChonaonaigh; and art installation for all to participate in; ‘Animal Madness’; fiddle making workshop with Paul Bradley; ‘Tunes and fun’ with Steve Sweeney; exhibition and hawk walk with Rónán Ó hEidhin; art exhibition; puppet show with Geraldine Bradley; demonstration of wool spinning with Geraldine Bradley; and a guided walk.
There will also be music sessions in local pubs each night. Events are free of charge with the exception of the music workshops on the Saturday morning. However the Traidphicnic committee will gratefully accept donations throughout the weekend.
