THE RÓISÍN Dubh celebrates its ninth birthday with a variety of events this weekend, including a gig this Saturday from 8pm with Boyfights and guests.
Boyfights, led by guitarist and songwriter Eoin Reilly (Disconnect 4, Lost Chord ), and featuring vocalist/bassist Liza McCann and drummer Dan Nestor, may have only played two gigs so far, but both outings have seriously impressed and won the trio much praise.
Boyfights’ sound is strongly influenced by The Breeders and the Pixies, featuring a quiet/loud dynamic filtered through a post-punk sense of rhythm and dynamics, as heard in such songs as ‘Cold’ and ‘Over & Over’. The band are currently working on a debut EP.
There will be other bands playing on the night and, according to Gugai, a special surprise guest: “Our special headliners we can’t name - but they’re out of this world....and may have won our song of the year!”
Admission is €5 but is free for members.
Festivities kick off tomorrow at 8pm with the acclaimed and award winning comedian Terry Alderton. Tickets are available at www.roisindubh.net, from the Ticket Desk at OMG, Shop Street, and The Róisín Dubh.
Terry’s show will be followed by soul, funk, reggae, and r’n’b DJ Dave Barry from 11.30pm.
Admission to this is free.
