Galway City Mayor, Cllr Terry O’Flahery, will today, June 20, unveil a commemorative seat in honour of Lawrence Craughwell at Blackrock in Salthill at 2.30pm.
The stone seat was erected by Dúchas na Gaillimhe, Galway Civic Trust, and commemorates the actions of Lawrence (Larry ) Craughwell, of Threadneedle Road, Salthill, who risked his life, on September 29, 1942, to rescue a woman from drowning at Blackrock.
The seat is located on a rise behind Blackrock diving area and adjacent to Galway Golf Club, and faces east towards the city.
He was honoured by the Carnegie trust — In 1908 the British Trust was established by the Scottish born philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Its objectives are: to recognise civilian heroism in attempting to save human life in the United Kingdom, Eire, the Channel Islands, or in the surrounding territorial waters, by providing financial assistance where the heroic act has brought misfortune to the rescuer or the rescuer’s family
