Fix broken lifts at Athenry Station now, demands Higgins

Disabled travellers and those with limited mobility should not be waiting six months for the lifts which service the footbridge at Athenry railway station to be repaired.

This is the view of Labour Galway East senator Lorraine Higgins, who is calling on the Junior Transport Minister Alan Kelly to ensure the matter is made a priority with Irish Rail.

Sen Higgins said the lifts provide key disabled access to both sides of the platform.

“Those with mobility issues are having great difficulty getting between the two platforms at Athenry,” she said. “Commuters coming from the Tuam Road side of the station have to ensure they get over the footbridge in plenty of time before their train departs and this isn’t always the case.”

Sen Higgins said it was “very disappointing” that the lifts remain out of order, saying “this situation must be resolved without further delay”.
