Sprinter Laura Ann Costello of Galway City Harriers has been selected to compete for Ireland in the European Youth Olympic Festival in mid July in Utrecht in the Netherlands.
The Dunmore schoolgirl will compete in the relay events, having achieved the required standard on multiple occasions.
In the Tonabrucky Challenge 6km at the weekend GCH athlete John Greaney showed a great turn of pace to win the annual Rahoon Newcastle fundraiser in a course record 20.26 with veteran Ian Egan of Tuam AC next.
The hot weather attracted a field of almost 300 people with Stephanie Liles of Florida, on holiday in Galway, winning the ladies’ section ahead of GCH young stars Maebh Brannigan and Barbara Dunne. Brannigan was also a medallist in last week’s Irish schools, winning silver in the 1500 metres intermediate girls’ race.
Monivea 5km and half marathon
A field of more than 250 lined up for the two races organised by Athenry AC stalwart Tony Killarney.
Matt Bidwell of Galway City Harriers took the honours in the 5km, winning in a time of 16.1, followed by Des Tremble of Donore Harriers and Joe Colleran. First woman home was Veronica Colleran of Ennis Track in a time of 19.07. It was a double for the city club in the longer race. Gearoid Hynes of GCH won the half marathon comfortably with a time of 1hr 21 minutes, ahead of Philip Niland of Celbridge AC. His clubmate Sinead Brody took the ladies’ honours in a time of 1hour 30mins.
