Two finalists emerged from a five-team round–robin format in the annual May Team Tournament at the Galway Lawn Tennis Club.
Despite suffering defeat to Team D by 56-48 in the earlier rounds, Team B, captained by Mike Geraghty and Lesley-Ann Walsh, topped the group and turned the tables on their rivals, captained by Kathleen Glynn and Brendan Daly.
Team B got off to a flyer, winning all four doubles encounters. Helen Lawless maintained a 100 per cent record in the tournament in partnering Colette Noone to an 8-5 victory over Maria Raftery (subbing for Therese Waldron ) and Marion O’Brien; Serena Silke and Lesley Ann Walsh defeated Kathleen Glynn and Olivia Deely (subbing for Monica Cuedo ) 8-5; Donal Hegarty and Mike Geraghty beat Francis O’Connell and Michael Howe 9-4; while Dave Burke and Pat Hynes followed suit with a 9-4 victory over Brendan Daly and Eugene Trainor.
The 16-point lead put B firmly in the driving seat and although the mixed matches were split with two wins apiece, the margin of 20 ensured a comfortable victory for Team B.
