Learn more about medical conditions people experience as they age at free talk

A consultant urological surgeon will talk about the common medical conditions encountered by men and women as they get older at a free talk to be held at the Bon Secours Hospital restaurant on Monday night at 7pm.

“Ageing gracefully…What can a urologist do to help?” is the title of a community health talk being organised by St Columba’s Credit Union in conjunction with the Renmore private hospital. It will be given by Mr Kilian Walsh who has worked at University Hospital Galway and the Bon Secours since 2007.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH ), prostate cancer, female urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, bladder and kidney cancer are just some of the conditions he will discuss on the night.

Mr Walsh deals with a wide range of urological conditions, including bladder dysfunction, female incontinence, diagnosing and treating bladder and kidney cancer and utilising minimally invasive techniques for prostate disease.

“As we age we are more susceptible to different medical conditions, many of which can be identified with appropriate consultation and investigation,” he says. “Urologists deal with the urinary tract and are involved in all the investigating, medical and surgical treatments which can effect the kidney, bladder, prostate testicle or penis.”

He points out that sometimes simple lifestyle changes can have a dramatic effect on some conditions.

“On other occasions certain medications can help improve the situation and occasionally an operation may be the right way to produce the necessary improvement in function, remove an identified cancer or get rid of an unwanted symptom. New treatments and concepts are always emerging.”
