THE FIRST book to be banned by the Irish Free State was written by a County Galwayman who was also one of the finest Irish writers of the 20th century.
In 1930 Liam O’Flaherty’s The House of Gold was banned for sale and distribution in Ireland by the state censorship board the first book to be so suppressed. In the 85 years since, it has never been republished - until now.
Nuascéalta Teo has republished O’Flaherty’s novel, with an introduction by Tomás Mac Síomóin, and the book will be officially relaunched at the Galway City Library, St Augustine Street, on Thursday June 13 at 6pm by novelist Fr Pádraig Standún.
The House of Gold describes avarice and lust in turbulent Post-Civil War Galway, but also of the beauty of Connemara and the writer’s native Aran Islands.
The event is being hosted by The Liam and Tom O’Flaherty Society, dedicated to bring the writings of Liam O’Flaherty back to the Irish and international readership.
