Residential workshop will explain how early retirement or redundancy payments could fund new start-ups

Over 50s from county Galway are being encouraged to start a new business, using their transferrable skills developed during their time in the workforce. Those who have taken early retirement or redundancy payments in particular are being urged to consider starting their own company.

Individuals aged over 50 who are thinking of starting their own business, or in the early stages of a start-up are being invited to a two day National Workshop on July 1 and July 2 in the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone. The “Change, Challenge and Opportunity” two day residential workshop is organised by Galway County & City Enterprise Board and the network of County and City Enterprise Boards and will focus on giving participants an insight into what is needed to research, start and develop a business.

Breda Fox, CEO of Galway County & City Enterprise Board said “Many people aged over 50 from Galway who consider starting their own business must realise that they have developed many transferrable skills during their lives. These are skills such as networking, their experience in both work and life areas which are essential for entrepreneurs.”

Organisers are hoping to attract aspiring entrepreneurs like Aidan McCormack of McCormack Training and Consultancy who set up a business after passing the 50 mark. Aidan McCormack, who attended a Senior Entrepreneur workshop last year, was inspired to set up a successful training and consultancy business. He is one of the speakers at the event and says he hasn’t looked back since he made the leap to setting up and running his own business.

Ms Fox added: “People who have taken early retirement or redundancy will often have enough capital for a strong start up – and consequently are more likely to be successful. These workshops will provide essential information, from setting up their business, to developing a marketing plan, running a successful company and formulating an exit strategy.”

The County and City National 50+ Enterprise “Change, Challenge and Opportunity” residential workshop costs €100 which includes workshop fee, accommodation overnight and meals.

Organisers are recommending early booking by contacting Galway County & City Enterprise Board on www.galwayenterprise.ie and follow the link to 50+Entrepreneurs, or register and pay online for the Over 50s National Enterprise Residential Workshop at http://www.meath.com/courses/
