Loss of Lynch’s Castle for tourist season a ‘disappointment’ says McNelisLoss of Lynch’s Castle for tourist season a ‘disappointment’ says McNelis

Lynch’s Castle, a major tourist attraction and sight seeing must in the city has been rendered invisible to tourists, a matter which has been called “disappointing” by a local councillor.

Scaffolding, hoarding, and plastic covering has been around the 15th century building as major works are taking place there. However Labour city councillor Niall McNelis said this “makes the city lose a major attraction for the months of June and July” and will prevent tourists from seeing it.

“It is a pity these works could not have been done by AIB before the tourist season began,” he said. “I only hope they are completed on time in early August.”

The castle is a popular sight with tourists and a major stopping point for historical walking tours of the city.

“I have spoken to a number of tour guides from Galway, and they have said that this major attraction when you guide visitors around the city is a big loss,” he said.

Cllr McNelis said “the least the bank could have done” was erect historical signage on the wooden frame that protects the scaffolding to explain the historical importance of the building.

“The bank should realise how important tourism is to the city,” Cllr McNelis said, “and try and address this permanently with historic information signage.”
