Council denies claims by Cameron over unused bins

City Hall is not refusing to collect unused bins from customers who have moved to other refuse providers, despite claims to the contrary.

This week Labour city councillor Billy Cameron alleged that the Galway City Council had refused to collect bins from former customers and that this was “damaging its reputation” and “steering any potential refuse clients to other providers”.

“For those who live in busy estates,” he said, “the uncollected council bins are hindering traffic and causing a nuisance to neighbours.”

The Labour councillor said he is “a very strong supporter of the city refuse service and I want to see it thrive”. As a result he is calling on the council to “remedy this situation immediately”.

However City Hall has moved to clarify the situation saying this is “not a punitive action against former customers”.

“The unfortunate delay is due to a recent staff shortage situation which has resulted in a backlog in collections,” said a spokesperson for City Hall. “The issue is now being dealt with and we are in the process of getting out to former customers and collecting the bins.”
