NORMAN J is probably the only DJ who can boast an MBE. He was awarded the honour in 2002 for his “deejaying and services to music”, but then, it was well deserved.
Norman Jay is an innovative and pioneering British DJ who first came to prominence playing unlicensed or ‘warehouse’ parties in the early 1980s. His diverse musical knowledge, and refusal to be restricted to playing from any single genre distinguished him from his peers.
He describes himself as a primarily house music DJ, but his sets includes classic 1970s and 1980s funk, soul, and jazz-funk.
Continually featured in the upper echelons of Mixmag’s top 100 DJs list, Norman J has also been hailed by Face as one of the most influential club culture figures of the last decade and “a clubland institution”. He also enjoys popular acclaim and is often called “The Peoples DJ” due to the width and breadth of his deejaying style and universal appeal.
Norman J will be DJing at the Róisín Dubh this Saturday from 10pm.
