INDIA’S LEADING percussionist Giridhar Udupa, famed for his command of the Ghatam, a clay pot instrument, wil be in Galway to give concerts and workshops next week.
Sean Agus Nua, the community organisation celebrating multiculturalism and promoting tolerance, is bringing Udupa, along with French bansuri player Fabrice de Graef, to the city for these events. The shows are part of the duo’s Bamboo and Clay Tour.
Udupa and de Graef will play an informal gig in Tigh Neachtain’s on Wednesday June 5, fusing Irish and Indian traditional styles; host a day-long workshop in Áras na nGael on Thursday 6 (cost €40 ), followed by a fusion event as part of the Sean Agus Nua Ethnic Sessions at the same venue; the main concert takes place in An Taibhdhearc on Friday June 7. Tickets are €15/12.50.
As well as performing on the Ghatam, Ghatam Giridhar Udupa also plays on a variety of south Indian percussion instruments such as the Mridangam, Khanjira, and Morsing.
Fabrice de Graef is a professional bamboo bansuri flute player, one of the very few in the West. Fabrice is the only Western bansurist to have received an Indian government scholarship to study with HP Chaurasia and Dr L Subramaniam, leading performers on the bansuri flute.
