Morrison’s magic seals u-14 shield win

Rahoon/Newcastle’s young hurlers clinched the u-14 shield with a superb team performance at the weekend.

Their forward division, including man of the match Oisin Morrison ( 2-1 ), outscored a valiant Ballindereen team by 4-3 to 0-6 in Clarinbridge.

Ballindereen had raced into a 0-3 to 0-0 lead after eight minutes before Josh Curtin replied with a free and Morrisson scored a fine individual goal against the run of play and a point.

After some resolute defending from captain Colm Tarpey and Liam Brannigan, Rahoon Newcastle then broke forward to score a second goal when Ian Ruffley rifled a magnificent shot to the back of the net. Brian Ndego’s left hand strike between the posts gave Newcastle a 2-3 to 0-4 lead at half time.

Ballindereen threw everything at the Rahoon rearguard after the resumption but resolute defending by the Kerr Brothers, James and Stephen, corner backs Tom Mahon and Nathan Ruffley, and goalkeeper Leo Gibbons, kept them out.

Instead two late goal chances were converted by Newcastle’s youngster David Hurley and Morrison to leave the final score 4-3 to 0-6.
