Shantalla to
re-enact O’Connell’s ‘monster meeting’
In 1843, the pioneering Irish politician Daniel O’Connell held one of his legendary ‘monster meetings’ at the Sliding Rock in Shantalla.
To mark the 170th anniversary of the event, a re-enactment of the O’Connell meeting will take place at the same location this Sunday at 2pm. In advance of this, a parade leaving Scoil Bhride and making its way through Shantalla begins at 12.30pm. The event will be attended by Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D Higgins.

on first colour photographs of Galway
One hundred years ago two French photographers, Madeleine Mignon and Marguerite Mespoulet, took the first colour photographs of the Claddagh village.
Mignon and Mespoulet were fascinated by the area, calling it “curiously reminiscent of some villages in lower Brittany”. They were sent to Ireland by the millionaire French banker and philanthropist Albert Kahn as part of an ambitious project to create a colour photographic record of the planet.
To mark the centenary of this event author and cultural geographer Fidelma Mullane will give a public lecture on the photographers and their 1913 visit to Galway, the Claddagh, Roscam, An Spidéal, and Headford, in the Galway City Museum this Saturday at 2pm.
