City assault accused remanded in custody

A man, accused in connection with a serious assault that left another man in hospital, has been refused bail and remanded in custody to appear at Harristown District Court tomorrow.

Cormac Lee (45 ) with an address at 103 Tirellan Heights, Headford Road, was brought in custody before Galway District Court yesterday charged with alleged assault causing harm at Tirellan Heights in the early hours of May 22, contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Giving evidence in court of arrest, charge, and caution, Garda Frank Hand said that the accused had been arrested at 1.20am and conveyed to Mill Street Garda Station where he was detained and later charged. Garda Hand told the court that Lee made no reply to the charge.

Inspector Mick Coppinger told the court that the State was objecting to bail. Due to the seriousness of the charge and the objections to bail, Judge Denis McLoughlin then refused bail and remanded Lee into further custody.

It is understood that the injured party, a man aged in his fifties, sustained head injuries in the incident and was still in a serious condition at University Hospital Galway at the time this paper was going to press.
