Renaming of Cappagh Park baffles city councillors

At this week’s Galway City Council meeting, Galway City west and Knocknacarra councillor Donal Lyons proposed an urgent notice of motion regarding the need to retain the Cappagh Park name on the playing fields located off the Cappagh Road.

“Over the last two weeks I have been inundated by representations from local football clubs, the general public concerning a name change to Cappagh Park. Galway City Council in their wisdom decided to rename Cappagh Park to Cappagh Lands, Barna Lough Rusheen City Park,” said Cllr Lyons.

After raising the issue in writing with the city manager, the director of services and the senior executive parks superintendent, Cllr Lyons was advised that in the Part VII planning process for the Knocknacarra Community Centre the name change had been agreed by the council.

“This was news to me and to my fellow Galway city west councillors. As there appeared to be no willingness to listen to my representations I asked my fellow councillors on Galway City Council to support an urgent motion on the matter.

“I am pleased that 14 of my colleagues signed the urgent motion which was carried unanimously. The motion called for Galway City Council to remove immediately the signage recently erected at the entrance to Cappagh Park and to erect signage Cappagh Park Knocknacarra Community Centre in Irish and English on both sides of the entrance to the park.”

It has been confirmed that the director of services for transportation and infrastructure will now liase with the five Galway city west representatives on the issue of renaming the park.

“Cappagh Park has been opened for more than 10 years and is known locally as Cappagh Park. The new Knocknacarra Community Centre which is nearing completion is located within the park grounds. As a local representative I am anxious that the park should retain its official name.”
