Skinnies or not skinnies

Skinny jeans have been around for some time now, and are still a coveted piece in a contemporary wardrobe. But this season we are seeing the return of the classic bootleg jeans, and I wonder if they had even gone away? To my eyes bootleg jeans clearly never went out of fashion, but skinny jeans took centre stage and it is no surprise that we thought skinnies were the only denim that were fashionable.

When it comes to choosing wardrobe staples, in particular denim, I believe you should look at what suits you as opposed to what is in fashion. If skinnies do not flatter you then classic bootleg or straight leg jeans are as fashionable and have similar style function, plus they exude simplicity, allure, sex appeal, and versatility.

If you decide to invest in denim this season, whether it is skinnies, cropped, flared, boyfriend, or coloured, make sure you choose a style that flatters you and can be dressed up or down for casual Friday, cocktail parties, or weekends away. Here are a few tips to help you find the best style to flatter you, and style ideas to wear your favourite denim.

Bootleg jeans suit most body shapes. A mid rise will flatter the mid section and a medium to dark shade is best for curvy hips. Pair yours with coloured mid-heels, a fitted top, and a trenchcoat for a casual Friday in the office.

Skinnies have a superb leg lengthening effect and are super sexy for going out, but watch out for the colour and the fabric. A dark indigo and thicker fabric is best for most shapes. Pair it with a loose top, a shaped jacket, and fashion trainers for a relaxed off duty look. After dark pair with high heels, a glitzy silk top, and a clutch to create a look as glam as any evening dress.

For a more street-style look go for boyfriend jeans and turn up the hem about two inches. Wear with a printed T-shirt tucked in and wedge sandals.

Coloured jeans are always an alternative to classic denim, and red or white are hot for spring. White can be worn with coloured pumps and a shaped shirt for a casual look, while red is beautiful with a black or white embellished top, especially for evening glam.
