Thomas Ryan - painting Irish history

THOMAS RYAN, the Irish artist renowned for his depictions of historical and religious episodes, is the subject of a new exhibition at NUI Galway.

Thomas Ryan PPRHA: Selected Works is running at the Mechanical Soils Lab, adjacent to Áras na Macléinn, until June 7.

This retrospective exhibition, from an artist who has been painting for more than 60 years, features works in oils, pastels, pencil, charcoal, and watercolour. On display will be two of his large historical paintings - The Flight of the Earls and GPO 1916 - painted in the Old Master style. The works are on loan from Dublin Castle and Leinster House. There will also be portraits of Seán Keating and Padraic O’Céidigh.

Exhibition times are Mondays to Saturdays, from 11am to 4pm. Admission is free and all are welcome.

NUIG will also launch its NUI Galway Art Collection Website on Tuesday May 21 at 3pm in the art gallery, Quadrangle Building. The guest speaker will be Prof Jim Ward. The university owns more than 500 works of art. All welcome to the launch.
