ThereisBear! and the man who wrote Lincoln

NEW GALWAY theatre company ThereisBear! will stage the Pulitzer prize winning play Angels in America, by Tony Kushner, who also wrote the screenplay of Lincoln.

Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes will be staged in the Town Hall Studio at 8.30pm from Tuesday May 28 to Saturday June 1

The play tells the story of two couples living in New York in the 1980s, against the backdrop of the Cold War and the AIDS crisis. Louis and Prior’s relationship is in tatters as a result of a HIV positive diagnosis, with Louis’s commitment in question as Prior’s condition worsens.

Joe and Harper’s marriage suffers under the strain of Harper’s valium addiction and pressure from Joe’s work. Joe struggles with his sexuality as Harper slips deeper into dependency.

Angels in America is directed by Darragh O’Brien and produced by Muireann Ní Raghallaigh. It features Sam Ferry, Hannah O’Reilly, Conor Quinlan, Chris Moran, Joe Power, Eilish McCarthy, Robin Oree and Claudia O’Sullivan. All are NUI Galway students and alumni.

The show will also play in Athlone and Dublin and a fundraising campaign is currently up on www.thereisbearfundraise.wordpress.com and the company is accepting donations.

ThereisBear! is also offering a Junior and Leaving Cert Shakespeare Workshop to schools to help students prepare for this year’s exams. The workshops will run throughout May and schools interested in booking ThereisBear! should call 086 - 8677339.
