As he gets ready for Antarctic Richard Donovan encourages public to run for Calcutta

Ultramarathon runner Richard Donovan is urging people from across Ireland to register for the 2013 Calcutta Run. The annual Calcutta Run will take place in Dublin this year on Saturday May 25, and the proceeds will be donated to homeless people in Dublin and Calcutta.

Throughout its 15 year tenure, the popular run has amassed more than €2.5 million in donations for GOAL and the Peter McVerry Trust.

Mr Donovan set a world record of running seven marathons on seven continents in less than five days last year, raising funds for GOAL in the process. He hopes to become the first person in history to run across the Antarctic continent later this year, when he will also run in aid of GOAL.

He explained why he is so supportive of the Calcutta Run: “I like how the Calcutta Run helps the most vulnerable people here at home and in India. I don’t know how I would cope if I was forced to live on the streets every day of my life, but I do know I would probably want and need help. The money raised by this run has provided help to thousands of homeless people, and hopefully it will continue to help thousands more.”

The 10 kilometre route around Dublin’s Phoenix Park, which starts and finishes at the Law Society at Blackhall Place, will be followed by a family-friendly party and barbecue.
