HE WAS born in Tupelo, Mississippi, the birthplace of Elvis Presley. His grandfather was none other than the great American writer William Faulkner.
He is Americana singer-songwriter John Murry and he is coming to Galway to play upstairs in the Róisín Dubh tomorrow at 9pm.
On the night Murry will play songs from his 2012 album, The Graceless Age, which has just been re-released, and is enjoying critical acclaim. MOJO gave it five stars, calling it “formidable stuff” and “ink-black gothic country gospel”. The Guardian also gave it five stars and hailed it an “extraordinary, a profound and moving meditation”.
His music is intensely personal, focusing on the many troubles he has endured, and on growing up in the Southern States. While confessional and brutally honest, his songs are never self-pitying. They are, instead, a journey to the heart of darkness and out the other side.
