THE FIRST exhibition to be held in The Kenny Gallery in Salthill in July 1968 was by Sean Keating, one of Ireland’s major 20th century artists.
It is appropriate then that a major new book on his art and the times he lived in is launched at The Kenny Gallery, in its current location, in the Liosbán Estate.
Sean Keating, Art, Politics and Building the Irish Nation by Dr Éimear O’Connor, and published by Irish Academic Press, will be launched by Garry Hynes, artistic director of Druid, tomorrow at 6pm.
Dr O’Connor’s book examines Keating’s 70-year working life as an artist, art teacher, broadcaster, and public commentator. It is the first ever full-scale work on the artist and is richly illustrated.
Keating is best known for his paintings of the War of Independence, his documentation of the early industrialisation of Ireland, and his interest in the Aran Islands.
All are welcome to the launch.
