Atalante - Roman laments and ethereal sounds

ERIN HEADLEY and her award-winning pan-European ensemble Atalante are coming to Galway to perform a concert which aims to “transport the soul and elevate the spirit”.

Atalante, along with leading Irish choral ensemble Resurgam, directed by Mark Duley, will perform a programme of 17th century Roman laments in St Nicholas Collegiate Church on Saturday May 12 at 8pm. The concert is part of the Galway Early Music Festival.

The inspiration for Atalante is the lirone, an ethereal-sounding multi-string bowed instrument often used to accompany laments about Mary Magdalene, St Catherine, and Helen of Troy.

Atalante’s musicians perform with triple harp, chitarrone, harpsichord, and lirone giving their music the appropriate otherworldly ambience to this form of rarely heard Italian song.
