Promising swimmer David O’Sullivan from Salthill has qualified for the European Junior Championships and the US Open over the summer.
Setting a new Connacht junior and senior record at the Irish Longcourse Championships on Saturday, O’Sullivan swam a time of 56.65 in the 100m butterfly heats and 56.32 in the semi final. The Salthill swimmer ensured his European qualifying time in the 200metre butterfly event on Thursday in a time of 2.03.73 3.
A member of Galway Swim Club, 17-years-old O’Sullivan is the only Galway swimmer to have qualified for the youth Olympic festival for the past six years. Boasting the Connacht long course butterfly record in 50m, 100m and 200m, O’Sullivan has his sights firmly set on achieving the qualifying time for the Rio De Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016.
Speaking after the swim meet, O’Sullivan said he was delighted with his time.
“I am delighted with the result and beating the Connacht records. Winning the BUA Award has been vital in helping me prepare and train for all competitions. I am already looking forward to competing in July.”
In 2012 O’Sullivan was chosen as the recipient of the BUA Emerging Sports Talent Award which supports, recognises and develops upcoming sporting talent from Galway city and county.
